For Teachers

The Kelton House offers two types of tours for school children: Option 1 is includes our permanent exhibit about the Underground Railroad. Option 2 is a tour of the home focusing on Victorian life and local history.  Both tours include a visit to the Underground Railroad Learning Station.

Underground Railroad Experiential Tour

Virtual:  Our Underground Railroad Learning Station program is available virtually if you can not visit in person. (Developed for third and fourth graders, but can be adjusted for middle school and high school students)

Three part Virtual Program includes:

  1. Students take a short tour of the Museum through zoom that asks the question, “What was life like for     a child in 1852?” This is a live tour and questions can be asked during the tour.
  2. Students get a visit from “Sofia” who talks about life as an abolitionist and her family experience and are introduced to the story of Martha Hartway.
  3. Students receive (in an advance delivery) an academic booklet to complete. 

 This event takes approximately 1 1/2 hours but can be shortened to fit the teacher’s needs.

Cost per child is $4.00 and can be paid for via credit card. The School may also be invoiced if necessary.

Tour times are Tuesday- Fridays 9-3.

 

Three-part in-person program: 

  1. Students take a short tour of the Museum that asks the question, “What was life like for a child in 1852?”
  2. Students hear a reading of Under the Quilt of Night (a fictional account of an escape from slavery) and complete an academic workbook.
  3. Students view a theatrical presentation by actors portraying runaways or abolitionists.

This event takes approximately 1 1/2 hours.

Cost per child is $5.00. (Some scholarships are available for transportation subsidized by State Auto Insurance Companies.)

Cost per adult is $5.00

Teachers are complimentary.

II. Kelton House Historic House Tour

(All grade levels)

This tour of the Kelton House focuses on everyday life in central Ohio during the mid-nineteenth century. Costumed docents lead a tour of the restored rooms of the Kelton family home. Students learn about history through the home’s artifacts and family stories. The tour takes approximately one hour.

Cost per child is $3.00.
