If you have been to the Kelton House for a tour, you may recognize our featured artist’s name. Yes, C. A. Hartway is a member of the family that includes Martha and Pearl, the two young freedom seekers that ended up at the Kelton House. While Pearl moved on, Martha stayed and grew up in the home. C. A. is actually the great great grandson of John Aurelius Hartway, Martha and Pearl’s brother, who also lived in Columbus.
C. A. is a self-taught visual artist based in Columbus, OH. His artistic journey began at a young age while attending the CCAD youth program in 1974. Since then, he has acquired a rich and diverse background in art. C.A. Hartway has a passion for story-telling from a four-dimensional perspective which leads him to create sculptures that inspire, intrigue, entertain, and elevate art lovers. His art defies (metaphorically) gravity and he challenges his own imagination with each piece, telling a unique narrative that spans time and perception. His portfolio showcases a range of sculptures that are both visually striking and intellectually engaging. My use of color, texture, light, and form creates a sense of depth and dimensionality that draws the viewer in and invites them to explore the story behind each piece. Through art, he intends to break down the barriers that define “Black” art as inferior in value and demand, and to help other emerging artists rise up to their callings.
