Green Lawn Cemetery, with it’s  current 360 acres with over 154,000 interments, is Ohio’s second largest cemetery.  Founded in 1848, the intent was to replace earlier cemeteries in the city which had become landlocked, where near the river, and were nearing capacity.  Influenced by the Romantic Era in the arts and contemporary poetry, attitudes towards death were changing and cemetery design was moving away from the older graveyards, churchyards, and potters’ fields towards more natural and serene settings.  This was the Rural Cemetery Movement.
Randy Rogers, our presenter for the afternoon, has been a trustee at Green Lawn Cemetery since 2011, and is a past president and current executive director of the cemetery association. With a background in wildlife management and history, he has a broad perspective on Green Lawn and its unique place in the Columbus community.
Randy will discuss the founding of the cemetery as part of the Rural Cemetery Movement and its evolution over time, its value as an arboretum and Audubon Important Bird Area, and highlight the connection with the Kelton family.
Resevations required.  Space is limited to reserve your seat today!
